EAST HARTFORD, CT, August 15, 2014 — Horst Engineering and Manufacturing Co. today announced it has launched its new line of cyclocross and mountain bike toe spikes.

Horst Engineering has a long history of supplying the bicycle products industry. Company founder, Harry Livingston, apprenticed as a bicycle maker in Germany in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He learned many of his engineering, machining, tool, and die skills working in the bicycle trade.

“For the past several years, we made spikes for our teammates, our friends, and a handful of retailers. The spikes we bought commercially were inferior. They came in one size, would rust, and they didn’t last a season. With the growing popularity of cyclocross, we ramped up our production and offer a full range of options in durable stainless steel,” said Scott Livingston, president and chief executive officer of Horst Engineering, and a member of Team Horst Sports, the company sponsored team that was founded in 1997.

The company launched a new website: www.cross-spikes.com and integrated an online marketplace to sell products direct to cycling consumers. In addition to sponsoring the Horst Engineering Masters Cycling Team, the company sponsors several top cross racers and will be announcing more sponsorships soon. Members of the Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com team have used Horst Spikes since 2008. Rare Vos Racing/Van Dessel/PowerBar rider, Cassie Maximenko, one of the fastest up and coming cyclocross racers, rode Horst Spikes last year.

“The spikes were great! I stuck with the medium length ones pretty much all season, and found them to be very consistent; there when I needed them, but never in the way. Some toe spikes, because they’re so fat, don’t dig into the hard stuff, and actually cause you to lose traction. These were always grippy and didn’t cause my shoes to pack up,” says Maximenko.

Spikes are also good for mountain biking. The design of the spikes has changed over the years. The company offers Small, Medium, Large, and Ice & Snow designs. They were developed by racers and engineers who tested them on some of New England’s most demanding courses, and in all conditions. The Horst Engineering Cycling Team will be at more than 40 northeast cyclocross races throughout the fall and winter months. Horst Spikes will be available at most events.

Horst Engineering, a third generation family business founded in 1946, is a contract manufacturer of precision machined components and assemblies for aerospace and other high technology industries. The company has an ISO9001:2008/AS9100 registered quality management system.
